About us

This web page (ISBN: 978-84-691-9456-0 / Nº de Registro: 09113241) started as the way of expression of the former research group organished around the R&D project "Función de la imagen fotomecánica en la memoria de la guerra civil española" (HUM2005/02010).

Its aim was studying the function of the image (mainly photography, graphic press and cinema but television and the internet as well) in the construction of the memory of the Spanish Civil War, the creation of myths which were spread during the conflict until their transformation in memory. Currently we also intend to develop this research from a broader perspective, including studies of the role and use of image in other contemporary wars in the international context that would unleash the large scale conflict of the World War II.

The main topics of our research are the followings: .

a) The image migration from a inter-media dimension (between different communication channels: from photography to graphic press from here to propaganda posters, cinema...) and from a historical dimension (new political, memoristical context where they are inscribed).

b) The function of these images reinforcing links between different memory creating and holding groups (syndicates, political parties, associations...). These groups are necessarily heterogeneous.

c) Iconographic genres designed in the Spanish Civil War and other contemporary conflicts.

d) Function of image as historical document: relation between reproduction technology, aesthetics and pragmatic function.

e) Audit the use of archive’s images with documental purposes paying attention to the rigor of the sources.
